Distractology 101

Distractology 101 is a new educational program sponsored by Arbella Insurance Foundation, since 2010.  Arbella teams up with local organizations to help teach new drivers about the dangers of driving distracted.

The mobile classroom was originally designed at UMASS Amherst and has been making the rounds throughout New England.  Has your teen seen it?  It’s hard to miss, as it is a 36 feet long, and contains two driving simulators.distractology 101

Once inside the trailer each student enjoys a 45 minute session in the simulator followed by web based training to make sure they understand the dangers and how to avoid distracted driving.

You may have seen this program showcased on the Today Show.

Distractology 2

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration 71% of teens and young adults say they have sent and or composed a text while driving.  While 78% have read a text while driving. Sending a text or reading one, can take a driver’s eyes off the road for an average of 4.6 seconds. That may not sound like much, but consider this.  That would be the same as someone driving the length of an entire football field at 55MPH, blind! Wow that’s scary.

Clearly this issue merits our attention.

Educating our youth and new drivers is one of the best way to reduce the amount of people who drive distracted…
